Course Description:
This course will help to fill the information void on ethical decision making with individuals who have dementia. Person-centered decision making is always our goal, but this is made more complex when there are communication and/or cognitive issues. How best to support individuals with dementia requires knowledge of what dementia is and how it impacts their abilities to participate in life.
Participants will learn how ethical principles align with best practice to support individuals with dementia and how this requires patient and family input and respect of their values. Theoretical frameworks in ethics and dementia care will be discussed and applied to real cases addressing eating, drinking, communication, and swallowing.
