Discipline Specific CEU Approvals:

  • PT: This course will be submitted to the MN Board of PT for credit approval; however, approval or the full number of credits is not guaranteed. Participants will receive a certificate of completion, which may be used toward professional licensure.
  • SLP Satisfactory Completion & ASHA CE Registry Submission: To receive a certificate of completion, participants must attend the entire course and complete the evaluation—including the intent to change statement—within 30 days. If not attended in full, the certificate will reflect adjusted hours. Participants who do not meet these requirements are not eligible for ASHA CE Registry submission.

Instructor Bio:
Katie has worked with children and adults with hearing loss for over 13 years. She received a Master in Speech Pathology with a specialization in auditory-verbal therapy and cochlear implants from the University of South Carolina in 2012. She received her Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS) certification through the Alexander Graham Bell Academy in 2017. Katie has worked at M Health Fairview as a member of the adult and pediatric cochlear implant team since June 2015.

Course Description:

This course offers rehabilitation therapists a focused overview of pediatric hearing loss, highlighting key causes, types, and the range of hearing technologies used in clinical care. Participants will explore how hearing loss influences a child’s development, along with indicators that hearing challenges may be affecting progress in therapy. The session concludes with practical auditory support strategies that PTs, OTs, and SLPs can integrate into routine treatment to enhance children’s access to sound and overall engagement.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  1. Identify at least 3 common causes and types of hearing loss in children
  2. Describe the function of various hearing devices, including hearing aids, bone conduction devices, and cochlear implants.
  3. Recognize at least 2 early signs and red flags of undiagnosed hearing loss that may appear in therapy settings.
  4. Apply 2 new auditory learning strategies to physical, occupational, and speech therapy sessions to support overall goals.
