PT Evaluation, Examination, and Treatment of the Non-Operative Shoulder image
Course Description:

Non-operative shoulder injuries and conditions comprise a high percentage of referrals to many outpatient physical therapy clinics, and patients can present with a wide variety of diagnoses, symptoms, and limitations.   The complexity of the shoulder joint combined with the high presentation variability can make it a difficult area to examine, diagnose, and treat.  Understanding principles of shoulder anatomy, biomechanics, and tissue irritability can help simplify the treatment of shoulder injuries/conditions and to improve patient outcomes.  This course will review these principles as well as exam techniques, PT treatment concepts, and return to sport/activity decision making when treating non-operative shoulders in out-patient physical therapy.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe how shoulder anatomy, biomechanics, and tissue irritability contribute to common non-operative shoulder injuries and conditions.
  • Identify key shoulder examination findings that influence plan of care and treatment decisions, including need for referral to surgeon or other health care provider
  • Generate a treatment plan of care and prognosis for commonly seen non-operative shoulder injuries and conditions
  • Provide return to sport/activity guidance for patients with non-operative shoulder injuries/conditions.
